Stories are part of the fabric of human consciousness, tales of men and women who dedicate their lives to a dream touch all of us. In 2010, Short Stories fuelled by Relentless Energy Drink, launched and challenged young directors to tell such tales, now in 2011 the pan-European short film competition returns to push things further.
Short Stories is a challenge to filmmakers around the world to explore the Relentless Energy Drinks ’No Half Measures attitude through film making. Thirty young film makers have been invited to submit treatments, from which eight finalists were chosen to make their films and compete for a £10,000 prize and the opportunity to be commissioned by the brand for an exciting new film project in 2012.
With an aim to inspire and support young film makers early in their careers, The Short Stories competition represents part of Relentless Energy Drink’s commitment to feeding back into the core communities that they feel personify the “No Half Measures” attitude.
‘Focus’ is the theme of this year’s entries, and part of the director’s challenge is to portray this quality via the words, actions and attitudes of their subjects. These individuals live and breathe it, coming from the worlds of core sports (skate, surf, snow, BMX) to music (rock, metal, dance, punk, drum n’ bass,) and motorsport.
Mickey Smith, Surf photographer and winner of the 2010 competition with Dark Side of the Lens, has set an exceptionally high standard, winning awards at the New York Surf Film Festival, Canadian Surf Film Festival, and the Surfer Poll Awards, as well as worldwide acclaim.
“After a great start we’re very confident that the second year of the competition is going to raise the bar even further” says Relentless Energy Drink spokesperson, Steven Ruhl. “For Relentless it’s important to be able to give young film makers these opportunities, whilst creatively showcasing the communities at the heart of everything we do.”
Confirmed Judges for the 2011 competition include Allan Niblo, A graduate of the National Film and Television school, producer, and co-founder of Vertigo Films, And Vince Medeiros, publisher of lifestyle and sports magazine, Huck, and editor of the action sports journal, Adrenalin magazine.
