Beautiful Balance

To the edge of collapse. ANDY GOLDSWORTHY

There will be those that whinge from life’s sidelines, cursing their bad luck and casting a jealous eye at the ones that are ‘just born with it.’ It is true, some people are imbued with natural ability from birth - coordination, speed, dexterity, strength - the true artist, however, is one who never basks in his own self worth. Instead, he pushes himself and his work to the limit.

Deranged But Surviving

Just how far can the human body be pushed?

“For days 20-30 of our expedition, when we were making the ascent of the plateau, the registered daily energy expenditures were 10,670 calories in Ranulph and 11,650 in me. They confirmed the highest maintained energy expenditures ever documented - values that lie close to the physiological limit. Look out for the full review of Mike Stroud’s book of epic endeavour, Survival Of The Fittest, in issue 2 of This Is The Order.

Skateboarding to Architecture

Skateboarding to Architecture

Iain Borden's definitive study still stands up today.

In 2001, Iain Borden, architectural historian and urban commentator, wrote a seminal skate text called “Skateboarding, Space and the City: Architecture and the Body”. It proved to be one of the original academic studies of skating, and is still held in high regard today. For a counter-culture so intimately bound up with the urban spaces it occupies, it’s strange that Borden remains pretty much the only one to give skateboarding and its relationship with architecture the attention it clearly deserves.

As part of a new series of podcasts called Architecture on Air, Borden explores some of the concepts and theories he originally outlined in his book. You can get Skateboarding to Architecture through iTunes, or check out the dedicated site - if you can figure out your way round: http://www.coa.uncc.edu/arch_on_air/flash.html

Back in 1986, there was no debate, dunking was new, explosive, artistic and the world was taking note. But when the annual Slam Dunk Contest came round, Spud Webb upped the ante somewhat. At 5'7'', no one expected a thing...
