Part of the charm of skateboarding is that it’s open to everyone. It doesn’t require a particularly heavy investment to get going, and the world becomes your skate park once you start to explore it. Lennie Burmeister began skating in the German countryside as a child, with no fancy skateparks or even urban jungles to practise his craft on. Instead, he learnt to build his own obstacles out of whatever he could find and, in the process, developed a deeper understanding of the art of skating. Now one of the biggest names in street skating, his journey just goes to show that every cloud has a silver lining.

Starting out

In 1988 a friend got me a board from the US and so I started out doing a sport which grants maximum freedom of choice and the possibility to do it where and when you want. There are no rules and endless tricks to learn.
