Starting out

My brother Dale surfed. From the age of 7 I watched him and his friends. I also did a lot of surf lifesaving. My passion for the ocean grew day by day. Every Saturday I had a surf lesson with the local surf club in St. Ives, and I won all the end of year club competitions. From there my talent and dedication grew immensely. I would surf most mornings before school and every afternoon, even in the middle of winter, when night fell early and I had to cycle home in the freezing cold, rainy evenings. I was the most dedicated out of all my school mates and I suppose that’s what got me to where I am now

The road to success

Rip Curl have been a sponsor from the age of 12. They took me on trips and adventures all over the world. I watched how the pros did it. I learnt a lot from travelling and surfing the best waves in the world - not only that, but from each and every person I met who left a message of experience. A word of wisdom. I soaked it up like a sponge and took it on board. Since then I picked up more sponsors like Relentless who have helped me push myself to new levels. I've been through many situations and experienced so much, thanks to surfing.

Career highlight to date

Winning the English championships in 2010.

Quote that inspires me

I don’t really take on board quotations from famous surfers to be honest, as it's probably something said on the spur of the moment and doesn't really mean much. I'm inspired by everything around me. I'm inspired by friends like Tom Lowe who is so passionate about surfing - he will do whatever it takes to be able to surf for the rest of his life, to enjoy every day of it, and he never forgets the reason he started.

Motto I live by

If you fail the first time, get up and push yourself even harder, until you succeed.

If I wasn't...

I think if I wasn't a surfer I would love to be a musician. Sometimes the adrenaline that I get from listening to good music is on par with making a mental barrel or landing a trick I have never landed before. I would love to be able to make music that pumps people up to do their sport, or just to go crazy and lose control on the dance floor.
