He who dares

The fourth entry in 2011’s Short Stories film competition, sponsored by Relentless Energy Drink, sees film maker Ross Casswell focus on one of the world’s most revered road races: The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Widely recognised as being nigh on impossible to master, the sprawling course offers those who dare to tackle it one of the biggest challenges of their lives.

Extremes and danger

"I want to keep it dangerous. That's what gives me the buzz."

Casswell’s film brings to the fore the stark contrast of the Isle of Man’s stunning, serene landscape against the intensity and flurry of activity that the race brings with it, with insights from Relentless Suzuki by TAS Racing’s inimitable Guy Martin punctuating the stunning cinematography. “It goes from one extreme to another,” says Guy. “It goes from being the epicentre of the blue-rinse brigade to this mad motorbiking place. Every man and his dog who have anything to do with motorbiking come down and it all goes a bit crackers for a couple of weeks.”

“The consequences of a mistake can be so big,” says Philip Neill, TAS team manager and veteran biker of the perilous course and the high-speed pursuit round its long and winding path. “You’re not going to fall off the TT and not expect to be badly injured,” he says. In true No Half Measures style, it’s exactly that sense of danger and daring which attracts Guy – who scored four podiums in five races at this year’s contest. “I want to keep it dangerous,” he beams. “That’s what gives me the buzz.”
