Solid start for Relentless Energy Drink’s new UK surf tour as Micah Lester wins Thurso heat of Super Series
Relentless Energy Drink’s new Super Series surf tour kicked off this week in Thurso, Scotland, with some of the best waves the area has seen for months. It was Australia’s Micah Lester who emerged victorious over the two-day event, marking his second straight win at the far-Northern surf spot.
Micah Lester takes the top spot
"I always love the waves here."
The action kicked off at the point break at Sandside on Monday, ten miles from Thurso, with 4- to 6-foot barrelling left-hand waves allowing the competition to begin. Relentless-sponsored rider Jayce Robinson came second in his heat, advancing himself to Round 2. Come Tuesday, with more 6-foot waves, he eventually made it through to the semis, where he was knocked out. Micah Lester rode into the top spot at the end of the competition, followed by France’s Gordon Fontaine; the UK’s Tom Butler and Sam Lamiroy came in third and fourth respectively, each taking home a share of the £5,000 prize fund.
“It’s awesome to win the first round,” says Lester. “I always love the waves here.” His solid riding was matched by Matt Capel bagging the highest scoring barrel (9.3), with more drama in the form of Russell Winter being unexpectedly knocked out in the quarters – and local surfers refusing to get out of the water when the competition was due to begin on Tuesday.
"Some good barrels went down"
Jayce Robinson’s picks
“Some good barrels went down,” says the Relentless rider “I thought Alan Stokes was surfing really good. He was the best in my eyes. Ed Smith got through to the quarter finals and he’s only 14 years old, so he’s doing well. There’s also a kid called Taz Knight who was charging on the big days, surfing pretty well.” It’s encouraging to see that new talent is shining through on the tour already – exactly the reason it was set up.
The focus now shifts to the opposite end of the UK, with the Lynmouth Open in Devon due to kick off from 10 October. You can check out photos from Thurso, and a video edit very soon too, at the Relentless Super Series UK Pro Surf Tour website.
