From dull, cold British days to warm and sunny Florida Everglades: Relentless Energy Drink sponsored wakeboarder Sam Carne gives us his latest update
Capping off his best year yet with a clutch of titles under his proverbial belt (UK Boat National Champion, Red Bull Harbour Reach Champion and London Night Jump Champion in case you forgot), wakeboarding genius Sam Carne has decamped to Chain of Weeks in Orlando, the global home of the sport, for some much-needed downtime and relaxed practice sessions. He fills us in on his time there in his latest blog piece.
Change of scenery
After a crazy summer home competing and travelling, it’s standard practice to go and find a warmer climate during the colder months. This year is no exception. I've been out in Florida for the last couple of months enjoying the hot weather, huge wakes and picturesque glassy lakes.
Saving the best till last
"It’s so good to be able to progress my riding without having to think about putting a run together."
It's possibly my favorite part of the year right now. The season is winding down, plans for winter are being hatched and time on the water is dedicated to whatever you like. Orlando is the home of wakeboarding, so what better place to finish off my season? I've been fortunate enough to be joined by fellow UK rider Dan Nott and his better half Robbie Rendo. It always helps to have a solid riding partner to push you. It’s so good to be in a relaxed environment and be able to progress my riding without having to think about putting a run together. It hasn't been just about water time. It's also a great time to rest the body – to iron out some of the kinks you pick up through the summer and to go explore the rest of this vast country.
Reeling in a monster
I was fortunate enough to take a trip down south to the Keys and try my hand as a fisherman. Although I’ve spent a large proportion of my life in and around water, I know little about the art of fishing. But with the help of one of the most experienced fisherman around I managed to reel in a few beauties. The local delicacy is Mahi Mahi: a stunning fish that makes for amazing eating.
Onwards and upwards
It always amazes me how quiet the lakes are at this time of year. The locals seem to be spoilt by the great year-round conditions. As soon as the temperature slips below boiling, the boats are covered for 'winter' and the cables empty – which means all the more calm, buttery water for me. Overall, it’s been an epic trip so far – got some quality riding, learnt a few new tricks, got some decent footage to play with and caught a sea monster. Next stop: South Africa!
