“With bow in hand and instrument thrust beneath his chin, he was like an avatar from another world, a man possessed.”
The violin master gets an illustrative update
Nicolo Paganini, a grotesque specimen whose pale cadaverous face was framed by dark cascading hair, was the man who cheated death to become the greatest violinist ever to walk the earth. With bow in hand and instrument thrust beneath his chin, he was like an avatar from another world, a man possessed, as if his gaunt, sinuous frame had been ravaged by the devil himself. Through music he struck both fear and adoration into his public, and he gave a city on the verge of degeneration and despair every reason to live. Paganini, the maestro, had to be heard to be believed – and then heard again.
