Germany’s biggest metal festival, Wacken, is sold out for the seventh year in a row

As testament to its mighty reputation, the 2012 edition of the Wacken Open Air (2-4 August) – the world’s biggest outdoor metal festival – sold out in record time. All 75,000 tickets for the 23rd annual weekender flew out the door more than eight months before the event itself, breaking all previous records and cementing Wacken’s standing as the ultimate celebration of all things metal.

Another killer line-up

The 2012 artist bill continues to grow, with a sizeable chunk already confirmed. Big draws include Swedish act In Flames, Machine Head, Napalm Death, Ministry, Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir and Henry Rollins, with dozens more acts from across the wide spectrum of metal music also featuring. From death to black to heavy to folk, all styles are catered for and the full scene represented.

Wacken Metal Masters

The festival’s commitment to championing fresh talent continues with the return of Wacken Metal Masters – the new band competition which sees the winners play a headline slot on a stage over the weekend. Last year’s winners, Pneuma from Costa Rica, have gone on to do great things. If you fancy your chances, keep your eyes peeled.
