An epic, eclectic line-up is in store for this year’s festivals, with NME, BBC Radio 1 and Relentless Energy Drink in tow once again

A Relentless Energy Drink sponsored event…

Who would have thought that an intimate jazz festival in Surrey in 1961 would evolve and grow to become one of the world’s best-loved rock, indie and dance music festivals? Reading and Leeds have been pioneering in their approach and line-ups throughout their history, and their menu for 2012 (24 - 26 August) is truly mouth-watering once again. They are truly festivals for die-hard music lovers, for people who want to see as many of the world’s most acclaimed acts in one weekend.

The Cure, Foo Fighters and Kasabian: three legends of their time

Headlining the festival this year are three acts whose influence spans four decades and who are all heroes in their own right. The influence of Robert Smith and The Cure cannot be underestimated, from their earlier supposed – yet ultimately denied - influence on the goth scene through to their lively synth sounds of the ‘80s through to their enduring effect on the moodier bands of recent times such as Interpol. Their undying, fanatic support is testament to their continually strong output, and with so many drama-laden classics in their oeuvre, they are set to provide a particularly memorable headline appearance.

When Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters outfit rose from the ashes of his career with Nirvana, few could have predicted the monumental fanbase and staying power that they enjoy. With more new music on the way this year and their live show as explosive and energy-charged as ever, it’s a fitting return for the band who headlined the Melody Maker stage at the festival back in 1995.

Kasabian meanwhile have emerged as one of the biggest British bands of the last decade, with a fittingly epic live show bringing their fierce, anthemic sound to life. One of the biggest draws in live music, they complete an immense trio of headliners that is as eclectic as it is impressive.

The best of the rest

The rotating line-up across the two locations is truly immense.

Just for starters: Paramore, Justice, Bullet For My Valentine, You Me At Six, All Time Low, Pulled Apart By Horses, At The Drive In, The Black Keys, Florence + The Machine, Bombay Bicycle Club, Enter Shikari, The Vaccines, Crystal Castles, Odd Future, Mystery Jets, Eagles Of Death Metal, Two Door Cinema Club, Maccabees, Cancer Bats, Blood Red Shoes, Deaf Havana, Metronomy, Katy B, Azealia Banks, Jaguar Skills, The Horrors and SBTRKT. More acts are still to be added, as if that little lot wasn’t plenty already.
